Gifts For Chinese Weddings

When you are invited to attend a Chinese wedding, the most expected gift you will bring for is cash gift. It is a Chinese tradition that people present an envelope stuffed with certain amount of cash to the newly – weds when going for a wedding feast. Many people known this practice, but but figuring out the exact amount to give can be a bit trickier. How much should  you give? Well, that really depends. The amount of money you give should be representative of your friendship or relationship. If it’s someone you met only a few times or you’re a poor student, 300 yuan is about the minimum. Closer friends usually give between 500-2000 yuan.

Tip 1: The cash should be clean and tidy, and stuffed in a red envelope as in Chinese culture, red color represent good luck, happiness and prosperity. You should also write your name on top of the envelope so the couples knows who gave the monetary gift. There will either be a collection box, or someone to collect these envelopes and take note of your name. 

Tip 2: Besides a cash envelope, you can also bring some other gifts such as flowers and gift basket to make the whole gift more thoughtful and presentable.
