Gift giving is a common part of Japanese culture, so knowing what time to send gift and return gift is quite important.

Marriage

Sending gift:  Within one week prior to the wedding

Give a return gift: within one month after the wedding

New baby

Sending gift: within one month after the baby is born

Give a return gift: start one month after birth

Subject: Go to school

Gift timing: early April

Give a return gift: No need to send gift, write thank-you letter or make a phone call is fine. The children call, write text messages or attach the opening ceremony photographs.

New building completed

Sending gift: on the date of the ceremony

Give a return gift: give small souvenir on the date of ceremony.
