Lantern Festival

This year’s lantern festival is March 5, lunar calendar is Jan 15. Lantern Festival is one of the traditional festivals in China, and also a main festival among overseas Chinese people. It started as early as in Qing Dynasty over 2000 yeas ago, it is one of the important festival after Chinese New Year(Spring Festival). The main activities celebrated in the festival is eating dumplings, watching flower lamp, and guess lamp puzzles. Below is the introduction in Chinese:

农历正月十五元宵节，又称为“上元节”（Lantern Festival），上元佳节，是中国汉族和部分兄弟民族的传统节日之一，亦是汉字文化圈的地区和海外华人的传统节日之一。汉族传统的元宵节始于2000多年前的秦朝。汉文帝时下令将正月十五定为元宵节。汉武帝时，“太一神”的祭祀活动定在正月十五。（太一：主宰宇宙一切之神）。司马迁创建“太初历”时，就已将元宵节确定为重大节日。正月是农历的元月，古人称夜为“宵”，而十五日又是一年中第一个月圆之夜，所以称正月十五为元宵节。又称为小正月、元夕或灯节，是春节之后的第一个重要节日。在汉族古俗中，上元节（元宵节）﹑中元节（盂兰盆节）﹑下元节（水官节）合称三元，都是非常传统重要的节日。吃元宵、赏花灯、猜灯谜是几项重要的元宵节民间习俗。
