How to send a thoughtful wedding gift to your Hongkongnese friend?

Hong Kong is located in East Asia and is part of  People Republic of China in state sovereignty and territory. Existed as a Special Administrative Region within China, Hong Kong has much similarities in culture, custom and traditions with mainland China. Today, we are talking about the wedding customs and etiquette in Hong Kong and the tips on how to send a thoughtful wedding gift to the new couple in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong is a most westernized metropolis yet still rooted in rich and traditional Chinese culture, so the wedding format may come as a mixed of modern western style and traditional Chinese celebration. The Western style are seen in the wedding dress, making a wedding vow in church and wedding ceremony while Chinese traditions are presented in the scenes such as receiving cash gift in a red packet from guests, the bride and bridegroom will toast to the guests at every dinner table of the wedding banquet to express their thanks for attending their wedding and gifts they gave.

Every guests are expected to bring presents to the new wed when come to attend the wedding ceremony, but what kind of gifts to send is quite tricky. Monetary gifts are always a popular choice and a practical present as the new wed can use the money to buy whatever they want for their life, the amount of the cash may vary from a few hundreds HKD up to thousand yuan depends on the relationship between the couple and the gift giver, if you are a relative or a close friend of the newly wed, one thousand HKD is a decent amount, otherwise, 300-600 HKD will be considered an appropriate amount as an expression of our goodwill.

Besides red envelope, you can also send the new couple a practical gift which they can use in their daily life, something like coffee maker machine, high-end kitchen appliances or deluxe vacuum cleaner. If you want to send something more personal, you can choose a personalized gift: a bottle of fine champagne engraved with couple’s name and wedding date, or a box of preserved flowers of which package are printed with couple’s initials  and the greeting note to them.
