White Valentine's Day and the Custom of Gift Giving

Many people often wonder what White Valentine’s Day is, and where it fits into all this. Typically, this type of Valentine’s is unique and special because it normally goes all odds, it is all about women showering men with chocolate gifts. Well, in return, women expect some gifts from men as well.

On the 14th of March, men are supposed to repay women who gave them chocolate gifts, with chocolates. In addition, the chocolates can be in form of honmei or giri, but this depends largely on the romantic attachment, and it is very easy to determine the meaning because it is a norm to see men purchasing presents than making them by hands.

During Valentine’s season yen stores and supermarkets are filled with tine heart shaped decorations and tinfoil wrappers for preparing candy. However, during White Day, one can only purchase ready-made products.

However, for men, during this day, men are expected to purchase more gifts for their women than in Valentine’s Day. It does not matter if the man got an expensive or a cheap gift from his lover or partner, friend or colleague. During White Day, the man is expected to spend at least twice as much as the woman spent on the previous month.

In a recent study, which studied the Japanese men in regard to this day, around 39 percent preferred not to get chocolate. In short, men do not want chocolate at all.

With a very high price tag for repayment, most men prefer to give it a miss. Out of the study, over 50 percent of men said they do not really care about the occasion, especially if they get to work with no gifts on the office tables. However, White Day is a special day, just like Valentines, and it still means a lot to millions of individuals out there.
