How to send a Gift to a Chinese

Giving gifts is a major part of the Chinese culture. The Chinese would much rather reciprocate a gift with another gift than to send a ‘thank you'card. When visiting someone in China, especially if you are a guest in their house, it is imperative that you bring a gift (whatever the monetary value) to show respect to the host, sometime something like a small box of chocolate or a pack of fine biscuits is good enough.

  • Bringing a gift for your friend, relative, business partner, or host is a good idea. The gift type you are giving depends on the nature of your visit. Giving gifts are an important way to build relationships in China.
  • Chinese are fond of items that are not easy to access. For example, the exotic imported food or fine wines that they rarely buy by themselves. So sending a gourmet gift basket or wine basket will be appreciated by most Chinese people.
  • Some Chinese people will decline a gift two or three times (sometimes even more) before accepting. Do not give up on the first try, but be sensitive to genuine refusals.
  • Chinese have a culture of giving gifts in return. When they receive the gift, they must give something else as a gift back to the sender to express their thanks.

Tips:
1. For business relations, imported food basket, quality wines are great gift ideas.

2. If the gift recipient have kids, sending them a kid’s gift baskets are also a good option as Chinese people are very focused on their Child.

3. If someone has just moved into a new house, sending them flowers with a vise is appropriate way, as it also sounds like peace.

4. To attend someones wedding, bring a red envelop containing a few hundreds of RMB is a must, as in China, we have a custom to give red envelope of cash to the bride and groom.
